ANDREAS POPPELIER

‘MEN WHO HAD DIED AS TITLES AND WOMEN WHO HAD DIED AS WIVES TO TITLED MEN’

"Jag står stum av beundran inför faktum hur man kan ljuga bara genom att ge sig själv rätt"
[ I am speechless with admiration before the fact how one can lie just by giving themselves right ]
Jean-Paul Sartre / Nausea (1938)

The mesmerization of the indistinct, the uncertainty about the meaning of words and phrases in a text can be fascinating. The words can affect and speak whether you know or you don´t know the signification. You can be enchanted by the phonetics, the mysteriousness or visually and then choose to let them guide you for a while; to be touched by the sublime. Often, to access the authors intention, regardless if it’s abstract, specific or emotional, the necessary to use a dictionary will occur in the end. In there, the answer, the actual meaning.

The works shown at Galleri Thomas Wallner will display sequences from unclear and vague events. Every scene is like the unresolved words, but in this case there is no dictionary to look it up in. The viewer must search within and in their surroundings; look for the unclear, messages and incomplete stories to fill in the rest. And do so by their own references, and in there find a totality that creates a context. Even the obvious can be hiding behind an illusion. The artist is not a dictionary in this case and has no final answer. And even if there was a truth, that truth is to elusive and can easily become untrue in the transmission. The works includes a large variety of markers that can lead the viewer in constructing their own story.

I work with drawing and painting on canvas, wood and paper and the works can be either two or three dimensional. The important thing to me is the balance, the composition, the meditative expression and that the work has one pulse. There should not be any part that is more dominant or conspicuous than the rest of the work. However, it may be important with dissonances but those are then spread all over the work.
